dance fly larvae?

#1 Post by sreynolds » Mon May 01, 2023 12:23 am

Anybody recognize this? From clean mountain stream in Vt, collected April 10 this year. I didn't put a scale on it; probably about 3-4 mm.

If 'dance flies' mean the Dipteran family Empididae, I think you are probably correct. When I get them, they are dead in ethanol and look quite a bit different than your individual, but yet, that's what I'd say.

I found out that this is a Nymphomyiidae in the sub-order Nematocera, not an Empididae. This link.
