Oblique illumination condenser LOMO ON 14. New toy!

#1 Post by smollerthings » Mon Sep 27, 2021 2:31 pm

Thanks Leitzcycler!

So I cleaned the baby, took out the old grease. Everything is clean and smooth now.

My first video with that shiny new toy. You can hear me being amazed below:

I found the manual of the condenser here: http://science-info.net/docs/Lomo/Lomo_ ... ondser.pdf

It says in there: When operating with high power objective (from 20x and greater) use a condenser, the aperture of which is 1.4 and when operating with magnifications from 10x and less, use the condenser with an aperture A=0.3.

However, on the condenser, the aperture ring goes from 30 to 6, 30 being the most open position. What does this correspond to?

You need to read those instructions a little more carefully, Greg

The short paragraph at the top of p5 explains
... it's “either/or” not an adjustment.

Unfortunately that lens was missing.

That question is still open. Some condenser aperture rings has marking around 6 to 30 and some e.g. 0.2 to 1.4, the latter corresponding the actual aperture. I have wondered the same question.

I wonder if that could be magnification? 30 is wide open, 6 is the min aperture.

.

That does seem to be the case … It’s a direct measure of the aperture diameter in millimetres.

For what do you actually need that information? The scale telling the real aperture would be much more informative? Although I never use that either. Just turn it so that the image looks good :)

What I find bizarre there is no mention about that scale in microscope manuals I have. Also I have two condensers for Olympus FH: Abbe with 6 to 30 scale and aplanat achromat with real aperture scale from 0.2 to 1.4. Is the abbe scale for dummies and the apl achr scale for professionals? However, I think my Orthoplan also has the mm scale...

So far as I can tell, I don’t

I suppose it gives you something to write down if you want to keep a record

… I didn’t design it, so I can only guess

Congratulations with your aplanatic condenser!
I remember seeing it in the brochures, that side screw was fascinating. Nice to see one in action.
