Slide labels

#1 Post by Greg Howald » Mon Nov 09, 2020 10:01 pm

I can't do little things with my hands very well anymore.
I use a Dymo printer with one inch square labels to make slide labels. It works pretty well but I wonder what others are doing. Any helpful comments?

I use a Brother QL-570 label printer and 1"x1" labels that I snagged on eBay for a reasonable price.

Thanks Kurt.
I appreciate knowing that others do this. I read the post you linked to and had to laugh about the centrifuge.
I have a brother in Tennessee. We have the same scopes and do the same projects long distance. I order something, tell him what it is, then he's gotta have it, and vice versa. I think we're driving each other into the poor farm😃.
You would think we would settle on one thing, but instead it's biology, mineralogy, protists, the list goes on. Today he ordered acrylic pour set so he can make transparent specimens for the stereo scope, so I guess I'll find that next.
Were having a ball together.

Hi together,
for slide labels I use a Brother PT-2430PC label printer. It can use up to 24mm wide bands and works very well. Especially when I make slides for our microscopy group it is a bit help as one can print 20 as easy as one. It is more economical to print the labels as a continuous band than to let the printer cut itself as less empty tape is wasted. I can be powered with batteries so it need only the USB connection to get started. It takes up little desk space and is easy to carry. The labels are designed in a Brother Label editor. For chemical bottles I use a simpler label printer with included rubber keyboard as it is quicker to use for this application.

I make a lot of slides and find it easiest to apply a temporary label to each, using UHU water soluble glue, and then print a whole bunch of labels using MS Word,
I can get 7, 1" wide columns on a sheet. Print with Arial font @ 7pt. At last 12 labels/column.
Each slide has a unique informative identifier based on date slide made; details kept in a notebook and on an Excel spread sheet.

300008.00 – 0437 –
Psyche casta –(Pallas, 1767).
14vii20-1
Box A1.1

360048.00 – 2375 –
Ypsolopha dentella (Fabricius, 1775).
19vii20-1
Box A1.2

620521.00 – 2755 –
Apotomis funerea (Meyrick, 1920).
14vii20-4
Box A1.3

1st 2 lines ID the species with the checklist numbers

The 3rd line shows date made, e.g., 14 July 2020 slide #1; data can be found in notebook for that date.
4th line is where the slide is stored.
The actual labels are only 1" square and I can get 7 lines/label

A 2nd label on the other end of the slide gives locality and date collected for the specimen.

I use the DYMO Labelwriter 450 with 1"x1" labels.
If I can't see it with my microscope, it ain't worth looking at. :D

Can you show an example of your Excel spread sheet?

Data entry is still a work-in-progress. I have over 2,000 moth genitalia slides and still have over 1,000 to be entered into Excel.
Slides are stored in 100-capacity slide boxes in the order in which they were made; some since moved to home-made trays.
Once they are all catalogued they will be rearranged by species (and given a new location, col. 4), i.e., the same species-slides stored together.

The Excel data sheet is 7 columns:
1] Hodges' Checklist #
2] Genus
3] Pohl et al.2018 Checklist #, specific epithet etc., Canadian distribution by provinces
4] current location of slide
5] sex
6] date slide made, full data in note books
7] image location in BugGuide; typing the # in BG "search" will bring up the image.

Thank you Tony. This gives me a reference point to do an Excel for my slides that I make.
