#1 Post by Microworld Steve » Fri Feb 19, 2021 8:11 pm

I'm looking for a ringing table. I don't know why, but I want one. :)
If I can't see it with my microscope, it ain't worth looking at. :D

If you can lay your hands on an old VCR, you can make one very easily.

I love this post! I have contemplated buying one of the Brunel ringing tables so that I didn't possibly mess up my vintage Leitz table! As I recall, the Brunel tables are very reasonably priced.

Hi Jeff,
there recently was a post stating that the cover slip has to be precisely central to use the Brunel ringing table, if I remember right. Otherwise the slides overhang touches the stand or hand rest of the ringing table. How is it with your Leitz ringing table?

Hobbyst46-Doron recently postet the idea to use a hard drive motor as the basis of the ringing table. This is probably the optimal basis as old hard drives are widely available.

Yes, they also have a good supply of mounting media, ringing lacquer, color agents etc.

I took some side and top view pics that may help show the clearances that are possible on the Leitz table. By moving the ruler around, I would estimate that a glass slide could over-hang the ringing stage/ turn-table by almost 1/2 inch before it would hit the pillar that supports the hand rest. I'll add that the Leitz table (based on the prism style Leitz logo) is at least pre 1950s in manufacture and probably pre 1940s just based on the quality of the materials and workmanship.

The scissors give some idea of scale (and support the table so it's at a slight angle to improve photo detail).

The clearance on my Brunel table is 3 mm, or about 1/8"

I would agree that an eighth of an inch clearance could be problematic. It is not uncommon to have a coverslip shift during the curing of the mountant. That could present an issue on occasion.

As to the idea of a motorized ringing table, I would suggest that it just adds an unnecessary layer of complication. A reasonably well designed table should easily spin for plenty long enough to empty your brush, and a quick flip of the wrist will get it started again.

A DIY ringing table based on a hard disk (actually, plates from 2-3 hard disks).
Spins for 15-20 seconds, which I find sufficient though less than ideal.

I'm thinking the easiest way to center a specimen is to pre-ring the slides. I have made up a dozen slides with painted rings. The depth of the ring can be varied simply by adding more paint.
Here are 3 one-depth-ring slides, the middle one has a specimen + cover slip. When dry I will add a further ring along the edge of the coverslip

Hi together,
meeting a tolerance of just 3mm would be too difficult for me. I spend a lot of time with slide making tests of this and that kind and my interest is in the stain or the arrangement of the specimen. Whith paraffin sections I fish them onto the slide with a small brush and am happy when I hit the middle of the slide in the width.
My own slide ringing tabe is made from heavy roller bearings. Due to the big size of the bearings it doesn't spin for ever, but it is quite usable. Only problem is that one usually doesn't have these bearings and they are expensive when bougth new.

I wonder if we could ask Oliver to make this available in his store?

I think what I will do is make a ringing table. I'll get me a small lazy susan, go on Amazon and get a set of slide clips and make a table. :)
