Wired vs Geared Stages

#1 Post by microb » Sat Jul 24, 2021 12:12 am

What is the advantage of a wired stage like the one pictured here. Apparently some people abhor the older style rack pinion design and only want a stage with a wire mechanism.

If the gearing is done right, I don't set that the wire and pullies would be that much different in feel.

Thanks,
Ted

[So the website errors silently out with png files. So I think I posted but it then just deletes it. So reposting the image here as jpg]

This is a tentative response, Ted … because there is nothing currently pictured in your post

A wire system can be built [at reasonable cost, and without excessive friction] to be completely free of backlash.

For the Olympus BX 'scopes the wired stages I think have no overhang when moved to the limit in the X-axis.
This 'overhang' of the rack has caught me out a few times, and I'd really like a wire-operated stage which doesn't have this problem - but it's finding one for my BX50 and of course affording one if I do!

Fixed it. I changed the image format so the website likes it.

Oh. I see what you mean with the overhang. Here's an AX stage with the linear gear pushing way out when the X is cranked to one side:

Also wired (focusing) can be pretty old style:
