Zeiss Axioskop eye pieces

#1 Post by sigitask » Sat Dec 04, 2021 4:15 pm

Just bought in auction Zeiss Axioskop. Shame but missing eyepieces. It seams that they must be 10x/25 30mm diameter, but Im not sure. Maybe anyone knows it? May I put other Zeiss microscopes eyepieces, or it is not compatible?

What came standard with the Axioskop 50 (or the Axioskop 20) are the Pl 10x/20 (model 44 40 32) eyepieces (with a 20 mm field of view). (BTW: Axioskop 50 have a 50W external halogen lighting housing system, while the Axioskop 20 has a built-in (under the field diaphragm) 20W light source).

The Axioplan (gen 1) came with the Pl 10x/25 eyepieces, but that scope is a different animal altogoether (much bigger and heavier scope than the axioskop, almost combersome).

I'm not sure the Pl 10x/25 (model 44 40 34) eyepieces will work on an axioskop binocular or trinocular head (because I suspect the prisms inside the Axioskop head are smaller than the ones in the Axioplan head). But I know the field diaphragm iris on an Axioskop 50 opens up to about 25,5 - 26.0 mm wide (I measured).
My DIC/Phase condenser iris diaphragm also seems to open wide enough to support a 25 mm field of view. But I would like to hear some input on this from other axioskop users who might have tried the 25mm eyepieces.

Do 25 mm Pl 10x/25 wider eyepieces work on an Axioskop head ?

Also don't foget... to work with 25 mm eyepieces, you need to have either Plan-NEOFLUAR or Plan-APOCHROMAT objectives... The ACHROPLAN, CP-ACHROMAT and ACROSTIGMAT objectives only support up to 23 mm field of view if I recall correctly (you can verify that info on the Zeiss microscopy website for each of the Zeiss objectives you own, they specify a FN (field number, in mm)).

Hope this helps,

For fun, I also bought these
"1pc 10X 22mm / 23mm Wide Filed Stereo Microscope Eyepiece Diopter Adjustable" cheap chinease generic eyepieces just to test and see if Zeiss Axioskop could support 23 mm eyepieces (50 bucks is cheap for a set of two new eyepieces)

Link here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/253415988067?_ ... BMqJ7VgLhf

They worked perfectly fine (although the working distance is a tiny different that the genuine Zeiss PL10x/20 eyepieces, but not by much)... One thing though, even though they were labeled 10x/23... when I measured they were really just 22 mm (measured with a stage micrometer, taking objective magnification into account). But anyways, still I know for a fact the axioskop can support at least FN 22 mm field of view eyepieces. Even with these cheap chinese eyepieces, I found the image quality to be surprisingly good (almost could not tell the difference from the Zeiss, asides from slightly wider FOV)... But I'm rocking Plan-APOCHROMAT (5x, 10x and 20x) and Plan-NEOFLUAR objectives (1,25x , 2.5x and 40x) objectives, so that must help with image quality.

Maybe you could buy these really cheap chinease ones in the meantime, so you can take your sweet time searching for a really good deal on good condition genuine Zeiss Eyepieces.

If you can score a set of genuine Zeiss Pl 10x/20 eyepieces (with adjustable diopters) for 100-150$, it would be a good deal IMHO. The Pl10x/20 are widespread, cheap and available (just beware of poorly maintained ones with lots of lens scratches).

The genuine Zeiss Pl 10x/25 are a bit more rare, really sought after by telescopists, and much more expensive (so I heard there are counterfiets out there, but never really seen any myself... hard to believe). Anyways a set of Pl 10x/25 in mint condition for 500-800$ would be a good score in my opinion (Zeiss sold them new for a bit more than 800 USD for each one of the Pl10x/25 eyepiece).

BTW, the picture you are showing is of a Zeiss Axioskop 50 (also sometimes labeled EL-EINSATS, for some reason I'm not to sure about).

Thank you Matador, for answers. I decided to buy new Zeiss PL10x21 eyepieces. It cost not so expensive about 120$ each. Im using plan Neofuor 100x, 40x Ph2 and Ph3 objectives, also 100x iris .
