So I scored a cheap Zeiss Glarex, nice when having an audience without the hassle of setting up a camera and laptop. It works fine as is, but what eludes me is what the motor is for. It came without a power supply, so I can't fiddle with it to understand what it does.
I only found some badly translated Italian page that doesn't get me any wiser.
Can someone explain it to me?

This engine, by a mechanism, move one of the two frosted glass (rear one) to oscillatory so that the texture of the grinding (though thin) is totally invisible, which makes it possible to observe even the most minute details of the sample.

This is the model I have. (not my picture)

It spins so the ground glass grain blurs to smoothness and all you see is the image.

Now I understand! I hooked up an AA battery for a bit and it worked. It does look a bit sharper when it runs. A bit less grainy, to be more precise.
Totally not worth the effort! But at least I know now. Thanks!
