A home made field microtome

#1 Post by legionair » Wed Dec 21, 2022 7:18 am

I started with two quick build anchors, one for the actual microtome and one for the cutter.
microtome steps:
-disassamble the bolds.
-solder(or even better;weld) the roundel to one side of the tube(be sure to have the "flat side" outwards)
-solder(or even better;weld) the nut to the other side
-place the bolt back into the nut and screw it up(leve a few centimeters for the specimen)
cutter steps:
the cutter can be used to make ciliders out of carrots or a potato.
in this cilinder you can cut a vertical line,in which the sample is placed
-secure the tube in a vise
-sharpen one side so it will cut your sample.(figure 2)

Thank you for this description, it is a very nice microtome design. What I like best is the combination of carrot-punch and microtome.
If you find need for stiffer blades the Olfa LBB blades are much thicker and equaly sharp.
