Something I learned while I was a glass art aprentice and that also counts here; When using a brush to clean your microscope the best one to use is a (real)badger hair shaving brush.
Their haires are the softest in the world and will prevent scratches on your optics.

The Silvertip Badger Hair brushes are supposed to be the softest, but they are very pricey!! Thanks for the info.

I use a small brush like that to put specimen water on my slide along with an eye dropper and a small loop of metal.

Good quality, small ladies makeup brushes are also very soft and good for the purpose.
