Micro algae database and image collection is online!
Hi together,
a former member of our MIKRO Hamburg group spent a lot of effort in photographing and identifying micro algae. I have had his 35mm slide collection scanned and after a lot of work with connecting image and database you can find the collection on the website of our main society:
https://nwv-hamburg.de/sammlung-algen-m ... steenbock/
After selecting a group you can click through the systematic and get to the images. There is a search function too, so you can search for species or locations. In case of the desmids there is a specialty: Some of the images (from location SVCK) are from specimen in the Hamburg unviversity algae collection. By klicking on the number you get to the entry in the database of the university and can find where this species was origninally found, often more than 50 years ago. You can also download recipes for cultivation water preparation for these species!
For the amateur this collection can be used to aid identification and get familiar with the genus and species names. And the images are a joy to look at!

Hi together,
nice to hear that you like this photo collection and find it useful. The samples are from all around the world so there actually might be an algae that was found in you neighbourhood! Many of the samples were originally collected in the 1960s, some of the diatoms may have been collected much earlier. Those desmids that come from our university are still in culture there, about 20 years later than these photos were made. One can even get samples from the university.
