I bought the 3rd edition but now see that the 4th addition is online:

Almost 1000 pages, 376 illustrations!

I have the third edition, nothing wrong with it at all. I prefer to have a real book in my hands, guess I am old school.

I have the 5th edition...and I love it..yes yes a book opened permits 'lateral reading' ( the flip to your phylum/class/genus...you pick up info on that brief voyage).

Currently with so strong a push to electric powered/electric dependant 'kendal type e-books'...the user friendly and unique capabilities of two or three texts opened at your desk...well it's ignored...bravo for the substantivity of the printed words/printed images!

Thanks, OP, for mentioning Kudo's "Protozoology". charlie guevara
