WTB AO 10 illuminator mirror

#1 Post by dtsh » Mon Mar 01, 2021 5:22 pm

An instrument I recently purchased arrived with the illuminator mirror having become detached and had shattered. Anyone have a decent one of these to spare or know of a good source for an appropriate fisrt surface mirror to replace it with?

I doubt you could find a replacement. When I had that problem - mine had lost its silvering, which all first surface mirrors do eventually - I searched for and purchased the thinnest first surface mirror I could find on eBay. It was thicker and far too large, but thickness doesn't matter as long as it's somewhat close. For overall size, the careful use of a glass cutter fixed that. Plenty of glass cutting videos on Youtube for tips. Glue it in with whatever you have, I think I used contact cement.

I figured that would be the answer, but have been hoping someone might want a few dollars to save me some glass cutting. It's not like the AO originals are cut very precisely at least.

You can buy orthodontic photo mirrors of polished stainless steel on ebay for very little. Very high reflectivity. Not too hard to cut and if you buy the right one there is lots of material to play with.

That would have never crossed my mind, thanks. I'll look into it.

Thanks much for the added info. Marking this as resolved.
