Wanted: Zeiss KPL 2.5x Photo Eyepiece

I know these are supposed to be rare, but I’m looking for a Zeiss KPL 2.5x photo eyepiece. I really want this particular magnification because of the rest of my camera setup. Unfortunately, I missed one that went for cheap on eBay a couple of months ago. Does anyone have one they’re willing to sell? Thanks.

Hi,
you might have a look at Rolf's new camera adaptation method: https://microscopyofnature.com/micropho ... -eyepieces

He uses combinations of standard eyepiece components to form a projective. I have tested his method and it works very well.

The modified eyepiece idea as shown by Rolf Vossen works well on my setup too.

Hit together,
at the moment my setup is:
eye lens KPL10x barrel KPL8x base lens KPL8x eyepiece lifted 7mm, optimal use of image circle, sacrifying a little colour correction towards the border.

3 images:
-some Pleurosigma with Planapo 25, oblique, left side is edge of complete image, right side is middle
-chinese object micrometer with cover slip, Planapo 25 from middle to right border of image, slight separation of colours is visible
-this image analysed with Fitswork, showing the slight separation of blue and red towards the border

Phomi 1 with tube factor 1,25.

This is already fine for me but I will do some more experiments, e.g. with a KPL 10x base lens I just got from Rolf.

With a M4/3 sensor the adaptation will probably just fill the image circle without lifting the hybrid eyepiece, giveing perfect image quality.
One caveat: There is a slight pincushion distortion, so if this were important for you a correction would be necessary.

Thank you, Microbob, for that great link. I hadn’t seen that method and definitely wouldn’t have figured that out on my own! I will try it if I can’t find the KPL 2.5 photo eyepiece. Ideally I’d still like to find that, if anyone who ever reads this has one to sell, because it would enable me to use the same setup on my Zeiss Standard GFL that I currently use on my Olympus BHS — I would just need to swap out the Olympus NFK 2.5 for a Zeiss KPL 2.5 and I’d be done. Unless the adapter height needs to be different, I’m not sure:

If I can’t find the KPL 2.5, I will need to get the adapters to use Rolf’s method. Microbob or Hobbyst or anyone else using this method with an older Zeiss, can you post pics of your adapter setup? Where did you find your adapter(s)? It’s hard to find ones that look right on eBay, especially with adjustability for length.

Also Microbob, did you mean to attach 3 photos to your last post? I don’t see them, but I’d like to!

Hello sciencenatters I have a range of KPL eyepieces, and will see if I have a spare 2.5x

Sorry, I have added them now.
I have an Olympus (FK?) projective and tested it, it is calulated for a longer camera length with a towering sepup high above the microscope's trino head. Zeiss West/Oberkochen normally had an adaptation using an 63mm achromat in the light path to the camera so it is unlikely that you will find a 1:1 usable Zeiss-Olympus combination with factory projectives. My suggestion would be to make individual adaptations and only swith the camera around.
In the 70s-90s most camera brands and accesory suppliers had microscope mounts that can be used for this. Have a look at these:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Mikroskop-Adapt ... 5118880102
https://www.ebay.de/itm/Ihagee-Dresden- ... 4410950211

The Ihagee one is especially nice.
I have attatched a photo with my setup, using a telescopic Zeiss tube and a Zeiss ring dovetail to Sony e-mount adapter I assembled myself.

You guys are so helpful, thank you. I love that I can post a simple “wanted” thread on here and end up with so much useful technical advice.

IanW, great! Do let me know if you happen to have the 2.5, or any KPL or even C photo eyepiece under 8x. Thanks.

Bob, those images are good. You seem to be getting nice results with your setup! The rest of your info is also helpful. Ihagee! I had seen those adapters and thought they looked perfect but didn’t know what keyword to search for. I ordered one up, with 2 extenders, and also an E-mount adapter for my camera. I will start with that and experiment with whatever photo eyepieces I can get.

MichaelG, that thread was interesting and now I have a third option as well, thanks. I had seen those Zeiss 63mm tubes but didn’t realize they function as a lens. I will try to avoid the extra glass for now, but it might end up being a good option if I can’t find the right photo eyepiece.

Thanks all!

Hello sciencematters, after checking I have just the one copy of 2x that I need. I do have 2 copies of the next best thing, kpl 3,2:1. Let me know if this might be of interest. I can send you photos to view of both eyepieces. Cheers!

IanW, yes, I’d definitely be interested in the 3.2x. I will message you. Thank you!

Is this Zeiss Jena or Zeiss Oberkochen/West? KPL sounds like Zeiss West though.

Hello, you are correct. Mine is Zeiss Jena MF K Projektiv.

Zeiss Jena and Zeiss West are close in their colour correction. There may be slight differences in the planar correction. Depending on the cameras chip size it will only cover the inner part of the image of the projective. 2.5 usually fits for full frame, 1,67 for APS-C, bigger numbers for medium or large format.

Hello Microbob, yes I find the MF K projektivs to work well with Zeiss West objectives, and as you say, coverage of the 2.5X is very reasonable, the 3,2:1 the next best thing.
