Olympus JM gemmological stereo for sale in UK

#1 Post by GordonB » Tue May 04, 2021 8:43 pm

This is my Olympus JM stereo dark and brightfield microscope for sale, an unusual and uncommon instrument. It is a specialist gemmological microscope designed to examine gemstones in detail and is equipped with a specimen holder that can easily be manipulated into almost any position. The darkfield facility greatly simplifies examination for flaws in stones and there is a field iris to vary image contrast. Underneath the base is a frame to tilt the whole microscope. The head has a zoom facility from 0.7x to 4x giving magnifications of 7x to 40x with 10x eyepieces and 14x to 80x using 20x eyepieces. This is the description from the Olympus website;
“Economic development in Japan triggered a gem boom, but the market was flooded with fakes. Jewellers needed to distinguish between counterfeits and genuine articles. Under the guidance of Zen Nihon Houseki Kyokai (now the Gemmological Association of All Japan), Olympus developed the JM Gem Microscope. It was launched in 1967.
The microscope used the same head as the SZ stereo microscope. The illumination system featured a darkfield/brightfield illumination device as well as a focal illumination device (Epi illuminator).
The JM was brought into action against fake gems, identifying natural gemstones such as rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and diamonds.”
The instrument is in excellent condition with very few signs of use and comes with;
10x and 20x eyepieces (one pair of each, all original Olympus)
2x supplementary objective
Epi illuminator (focusable)
Clear stage insert
White stage insert, gloss on one side, matt on the other
Large reversible white and black stage insert
Adapter for ring light (Ring light is not supplied)
Pair of eyepiece cups
Spare bulbs for both epi and transmitted illuminators
Original manual
Power cord
Lockable case with base bolts for secure transport
£350 - I cannot post this, it's far too heavy and delicate but it can be collected from either Suffolk or the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham (my daughter works there).
