For sale is a rare Spencer 58 macroscope
Please see attached photos.
Manufacturer description of this scope can be found in page 58 to page 61 of the following Google Books document:
https://books.google.com/books?id=EPxYA ... 58&f=false
Overall in good optical and mechanical condition. I am selling it at its original cost to me, for $123.45 shipped to anyone in continental USA (I paid $110 to get this scope and it costs $13.45 to ship it with USPS Priority Medium Flat Rate Box). Sorry, no international shipping. Local pick up is possible. This will be on eBay for $140.8 shipped (including additional eBay and Paypal fees of $17.28).
Here is an eBay listing selling one of this, with slightly better condition, for $355 (2.8 times more than my price): http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-SPENCER ... SwoudW2gea
This scope can be used at horizontal position (for viewing aquarium), vertical position (for viewing petri dish) or any position in between (for viewing natural macro subjects such as plants or insects). Please see attached photos for positioning demonstration. To get the same positioning from a modern scope, one would need a very heavy boom stand and articulating arm. Yet, the antique scope does all that with a relatively light 7.88 lbs of weight (without stage).
It comes with a 3.4x objective and a 1.7x objective. No eyepieces are included (any 23 mm compound eyepiece will work, and I can include a pair of Leitz for additional $19, if buyer wants). I heard a 10x dry objective and a 10x water immersion objective were also sold for this scope, though those could be even rarer than this scope itself. Yes, you read that right, water immersion 10x objective on a macroscope!
Defects:
1) It does not currently have a stage or mirror.
Apochronaut has and can supply those for additional $45 + shipping (from Canada), if buyer wants. Apochronaut's stage is missing a plate, though a DIY wood/polycarbonate plate is easy. Stage can be placed at a position shown in photo "8".
2) the 3.4x objective has a small chip in its outer lens periphery. Also lens shell has a chip. Please see photo "10" (sun reflection made the chip look much wore than it actually is).
I though it would affect image quality, but it did not (I questioned original seller for this and he said no affect, I could not believe it until I tested it myself).
3) the scope body has an engraving "RLM" and some cosmetic paint chips.
And not really a defect, but rather a design. This scope can be used as a monocular. Its objective and eye tube are designed such that one side is lower than the other side. The 3.4x objective has an adjustment wheel to compensate this and it works well (see photo "9"). The scope also has a shutter stop to close one side of the eye tube.
It pains me to sell this black beauty. I have a strange affection for it and really like its versatility and design. It is also a great conversation piece / display item. However, I was offered a microscope part that I really want (and is also quite rare and expensive), so I have to sell off something to fund that purchase. I ask that the buyer give me the first consideration, if (s)he were to sell it in the future (yes, I want the opportunity to buy it back).
