Isn't that a bit of overkill for non-super-resolution microcopy?

It will allow for cropping.
As an 8.1mp is good for 4k which I don't have.
I sometimes wonder if the megapixel arms race is only relevant crammed in the isles of a retailer where it's possible to see the difference.

Unlike every other form of photography, microphotography sees sensor resolution value fall off a cliff after 100x. Oliver has a good video detailing why anything over 8Mb sensor size is wasted beyond moderate magnifications. Makes sense...laws of physics are a harsh mistress.
