Hi,

I am going away on sabbatical and have to put my beloved Labophot into storage. Does anybody know where to source a not too expensive, appropriate wooden box in the UK? These https://www.rajapack.co.uk/cardboard-bo ... 00360.html have a good quality/price ratio, but sizes are a bit off for the kind of microscopes most of us use.

TIA

.
Not sure if your microscope would fit in this, but if it did, it would be well protected.

If it's once in-once out, why not hammer a crate yourself?

Thanks! I had not thought about it and it’s a brilliant idea, since it solves the issue of padding the case too. I just need to search for the right size. It would also provides an obvious orientation for the movers, so that the microscope does not risk being stored upside down.

After a long search, I could not find any reasonably-priced camera travel case that would fit the Labophot. I am going to try this heavy duty case https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06 ... SN51&psc=1

lined with abundant foam padding.

Hi pippo, I've converted wooden wine boxes to microscope carry-cases. But I.m not clear why your home base is not safe for your Labophot simply with lens covers and dust cover, perhaps added large plastic bag closed at top with rubber band

My workhorse Labophot does have it's original Nikon wooden case, but this case is terribly thin wood and would never protect the stand from damage in shipment..guess I wonder what perils your Labophot faces while you are away on sabatical. charlie g

Hi Charlie,

My home base is being let for the year (the whole family is moving with me) and personal items are moved into storage by a removal company. I am contemplating buying a Lomo while away. It’s light enough and I could convert it to, poor man, DIC further down the line.

I am afraid my wine doesn’t come in wooden box. I guess it’s not posh enough;-)

I prefer plastic totes for microscope storage. They are available in sizes to fit most anything and with tight-fitting lids. Cut some foam cushioning to fit inside and they'll protect the scope from rough handling. Put in some silica gel packs and they'll protect optics from mold and fungus.

Good point about the silica gel, which brings me to a related question.

I have seen advice concerning shipping, rather than storing, microscopes of removing the head and wrapping it in cling film (I guess to minimise dust and debris collection) before protecting with some form of padding. Is that valid for longish term storage and, if so, should one put some silica gel pack inside the cling film.

Found it! Most others are not tall enough (and reported inside measurements are incorrect).
