All the folding tables that I've seen are not solid enough. You need something very solid that does not shake if you touch it or if you bump against it gently. Also it should not be too high so you can look through the eyepieces when you are sitting at your chair without getting a neck pain. I think you can make one quite inexpensively out of cinder blocks and a thick piece of plywood. Others may have better ideas, though.

Ah, memories of the dorm furniture in the 60s.

A good solid bench is a must, but don't forget the floor it is sitting on.

I ordered this desk from Walmart and although putting it together was a pain I am quite happy with it. Ample storage and very solid.

No.
A card table is shaky by its nature. I used one for years. I wasn't happy with it, but I used it.
Then I got a solid workbench from Sam's Club, if you look you will find a thread here on this forum all about it. Sure it was a little expensive, but well worth it. It is heavily made and rock solid stable.
Other folks here have built their own tables and are very happy with them.
Search the forum a little and you fill find all these things.

In my view, those are far from being solid enough (others may disagree). For under $50, I think the cinder blocks + 3/4" plywood would be far better (I wasn't kidding). You could substitute a pair of good quality, solid, adjustable height saw horses for the cinder blocks. Either way, you can easily cover the ends with something to make it look less improvised. I think your other alternative would be to find someone wanting to sell a used but very solid bench or table, or spend upward of $200 to $300 on a new table (again, in my view). There maybe better solutions, though. Apart from being solid, height is very important, as I said before, especially if your microscope chair's height is not adjustable or not sufficiently adjustable. My 2 cents' worth.

Edit: I just checked JimT's link http://www.walmart.com/search/?query=am ... 151202pcom which is under $150.
Also, here is the link to Crater Eddie's post about his bench which looks perfect for the job:

I have to keep llooking than.
If you look online for microscope tables
You see how sick the price is.
Even a lab table not the right price
What option can a home owner have. Nice strong stable table for a microscope?

Look for a used kitchen table, or an old writing desk. Either one, if of decent build, should be stable enough for an observation desk. Even an old computer desk might work. There are many possibilities.
