New addition to my stable
Christmas came early at our house today! This is my "new" Olympus BH-2 / BHTU. I have wanted one of these since the last lab Wife and I worked in, we had one in hematology. This sure is a sweet scope! Everything works smooth as silk, and the optics are very clean. It looks like it was barely used.
Objective lineup: 4x .10, 10x .25, 20x .40, 40x .65, 100x 1.25 oil, all Olympus DPLANS.
Eyepieces: Olympus WK 10x/20L
Thanks very much to forum member "einman" for finding this super scope for me!
Now I need to find a trinoc for it. Maybe next Christmas!

It is a very nice looking microscope. Now you can begin the lifelong quest of acquiring accessories.... let's see... S Plans, PlanApos, phase contrast, a polarizing set, a triocular body with a whole bunch of camera adapters, a drawing tube, a dual viewing set (for your wife)... an outboard motor...

Enjoy it! I told you it was in excellent shape! I did clean it up a little.

It sure is in excellent shape! And super clean.
As far as accessorizing it, yes, I can see that that could be a life long quest .
I had thought about S PLANS, maybe sometime down the road... a 40x anyway.
My first upgrade will of necessity be a trinoc. They seem to be a little on the pricey side, so that will be a long term goal. For now I'll leave the photography to the LOMO and use the BH-2 for the sheer pleasure of visual observation.

Congratulations, CE.
If you ever want to offload your LOMO 40/0.95 objective and switch to BH2's (future) optics - my wallet is ready and would offer you twice the amount of your original cost I am sure you know LOMO short barrel objectives don't perform well on a DIN scope without modification........

Re: New addition to my stable
Congratulations! I know this has been a long time dream of yours which has now come true, thanks to einman. Very nice scope indeed.
(I think any BH or CH trinoc will fit (but please verify my statement). Sometimes it is cheaper to buy a whole microscope (e.g., 'not working for parts") with a good trinoc. That is what I did with my CHA (I found a not-working trinoc CHB which I bought at a very good price (I don't remember how much) and swapped the heads. It turned out the CHB only needed a new bulb and gluing the lamp compartment cover, otherwise it was very clean, so I fixed it and will be giving it for Christmas to my granddaughter.)

Congratulations CE, it looks like a super rig.
I'll be watching for the shakedown cruise photos.
Enjoy it!

Yes, let's talk about that tablecloth.

Re: New addition to my stable
I had read that the correction in the Olympus optics was supposed to be very close to that in the LOMO optics, so I had to try it out. I replaced one of the Olympus eyepieces with a LOMO eyepiece and looked at a blood slide. Looking through both as one normally does, I could tell a difference, but not a huge difference, between the two. Using both LOMO eyepieces in the BH-2 yielded a very acceptable image, suggesting that the corrections are indeed quite close. Next I tried transplanting the Olympus 20x DPLAN objective onto the LOMO L-2-2. That huge DPLAN looked a little comical amongst the smaller LOMO objectives, but you know, it yielded a very nice image through the eyepieces. The very flat field of the DPLAN was very nice compared to the shallow field of the LOMO 20x APO. After going this far, I just could not resist the temptation of trying the LOMO trinoc on the BH-2. It seemed to fit into the BH-2 dovetail, and yielded a pretty good image. However, stepping through the OPTOVAR settings, when I hit the Bertrand Lens I could see that the alignment was off a fair bit. Its possible that the dovetails aren't a complete match or something. By this time it was getting fairly close to time for me to get up and go to work, so I put everything back where it is supposed to be and put the scopes, and myself, to bed.
I realize that this was far from a scientific comparison, and the lateness (earliness) of the hour could have been clouding my perceptions, but it was a fun experiment. I'll play with it some more sometime.

Re: New addition to my stable
CE,
You may be altering optical tube length when you switch around heads or put a short objective on extender to be parfocal with DIN objectives (I know you are not doing the later).
This graph shows you the tolerance of NA with tube length variation:https://www.google.com/search?q=tube+le ... OCzrb9M%3A
For example, at NA 0.5 or above, you may not want to change tube length by 10 mm. My Nikon head, for example, has an optical length that is a bit shorter than my AO4 head, due to different nose piece thickness.
That was a very rigorous test though, so in reality with daily subjects and eyes, it may not as bad as it sounds. You may want to comply with that graph, if you want top quality photographs though (for one, cameras are more sensitive than eyes).

Re: New addition to my stable
Well, I figured since they were both 160mm tube length scopes it would be worth checking out how well the optics played together.
I guess it's not that simple.
I'll have to check that out, thanks for the link.
