Hi everyone,
I was fortunate enough to come by this old Zeiss. It works pretty well, but has no illuminator. I've been hacking a Leitz illuminator to test the micoscope, but I want to get the correct part.
Problem is, I don't know which model I have, or therefore which part I need to get.
It looks like a Zeiss Photomicroscope, but without all the camera stuff embedded in the mount.
The Optovar has gradations of 1.25, 1.6 and 2, if that helps?
Cheers
Markus

Re: Help Identifying my Zeiss?
Hi Markus,
this is a Zeiss Universal 1, probably second edition, 1960s (please unmount nosepiece and show picture of the dovtail for ID).
As far as I can see it is only equipped for transmitted light. For this you would have to connect a Lampe 60 or 100 to the dovetail at the back.
It is a great microscope that can fairly easily be equipped for epi fluorescence, DIC, epi bright- and darkfield - and the components are available and comparatively affordable.
It looks a bit gigantic but is very powerful to use and tankes up just one microscope desk space unit , only a little larger than ordinary microscopes. One drawback: It is a bit big and unwieldy and my similar Phomi 1 has not been moved again since I have put it on the desk.

Re: Help Identifying my Zeiss?
Thanks Bob, that's great to know! Now I can look for an illuminator!
I'm attaching some images of the turret dovetail.
Cheers

Re: Help Identifying my Zeiss?
I should also add, it came with a separate turret that i can't for the life of me figure out how it's supposed to attach. It's a pity because it's full of some quite nice Epiplan objectives.
It looks to me like it's meant to use the alternate light path via the prism in the base, but I can't really see how this 'dovetail' would hold anything in. One side is flat, and the other slopes *outward!
Besides, my scope is missing the reflector that would bounce the light back out to the objective.
Cheers

Re: Help Identifying my Zeiss?
There are different turret attachment systems depending on how old your Universal tube head is. The first version has the slip on dovetail fitting/attachment on the epi unit and your objective turret has the newer slide in dovetail fitting/attachment, which is used by all subsequent models of the Universal and Photomicroscopes.
Below the left one the most common fitting and the one on the right is the older less common version.
