Leica / Reichert Jung Polyvar Microscope Illuminator Plug Type

#1 Post by MWK » Fri Feb 26, 2021 4:07 pm

Hi All,

I'm trying to source a socket for this 12V 100W connector since the one on my power supply broke. Anyone have any idea what these are called and if they even make them anymore?

Many of Reichert's electrics after 1962 came from AO. AO used a very similar plug for a number of applications, just without the registration guides, likely necessary for DC ? There was a similar plug used for AC. What is the pin width? The AO AC version is 1 cm. Sometimes n.o.s. wires and plugs from AO show up on ebay.
Are you in Europe or N.A.?

For the time and cost involved in finding an exact replacement - maybe just replace an entire pair capable of handling at least 10 amps? Female panel mount into the scope. Male plug on the illuminator end.

I'm in NA. If I don't find it, I will just change them out. But, it would be nice to keep everything as original as possible. The pins are 3mm. Thanks for your advice!

This style plug was used right up to to current Leica models.
Part should still be available from a Leica service dealer.
Part number is 11 307 155 004 015
Description is ‘power cord’

Any idea what the socket would be?

Sure,
11 302 013 170 001 - ‘Jack’

There is also a plastic spacer between the socket and frame, which contains the keyway to the shape of the plug. Sometime if the plug/socket has become too hot, this warps and you may not be able to fit a new plug into it.

This is 11 302 013 170 003 - ‘guide plate’

These part numbers are from DMLB, quite old and may have been updated, though they’re a start.

I meant, the width from pin to pin, not pin diameter.

As mentioned, the pin diameter is 3mm, with a length of 10mm.
The distance between pins in approx 6.5mm.
So, pin centre to pin centre would be 9.5mm.
The diameter of the round black plastic part of plug is 16mm.
Then you have the male and female semicircle lumps (key way) which both have a radius of approx 2mm
That should pretty much do it :D

Turns out they charge $90USD just for the cable. I think I'll convert to simple banana plugs. :)

The standard 2 pin plug AO and Reichert used for about 20 years should work. Those can be pinched from a derelict part. I probably have one attached to something that doesn't need it. I measured the pin to pin width earlier at 10mm but that one has a tiny bit of splay. Others come out at closer to 9.5mm.
It just doesn't have the keyways to register the polarity but otherwise the plug diameter and profile is similar to almost identical, depending on the vintage of the plug. Some of the older ones used in the early 60's had a bakelite, removable surround, so the wires were inserted into the plug and locked in with screws. Later versions had a moulded plug housing. You could determine the polarity, then make a female keyway in the plug, that would be enough. You wouldn't need the male.

You can find them on AO teaching attachments or bridges that had the illuminated pointer, series 10 tungsten illuminator plugs, series 4 illuminator plugs, starlite illuminators etc. etc.

Bulbs in AC don't have polarity so that's not a problem. I ended up getting banana plugs on this microscope and these work great. Cost me $4. :D

Some microscope power supplies are in fact DC, hence the necessity for polarity. It is curious that they would use a polarized plug if not needed. Maybe that was just what was easily available.
