Ordered a t400a

#1 Post by Greg Howald » Thu Apr 29, 2021 12:28 am

Today I ordered an Amscope T400A. This scope is the same physical size as the T490A. Both have the same ocular set up. Both use 20 watt halogen lighting. Both use the same accessories for dark field and phase contrast. The 490 has a 30 degree head and the 400 has a 45 degree head. The 490 has a simul-focal trinocular tube and the 400 is selected thus eliminating the right eyepiece. Comparison between the two scopes should be interesting but I do not expect any difference in image quality. The T400 is $ 280.00 and the 490 is
$ 333.00. More fun.

They do seem much of a muchness.

Have you considered, given that you have experience, of getting a used microscope - one of the big four or five or six?
Zeiss Standard WL (somewhat fashion challenged) & Wild M8
Olympus E-P2 (Micro Four Thirds Camera)

I have not considered that at this point most likely because I'm rather unfamiliar with the big four and wouldn't know the difference between something worthwhile and a pig in a poke. And while I have in the past made a pigs ear look like a silk purse I also possess the ability to do the exact opposite.

The Amscope t400a came today. It is the exact same scope as the t490 with one exception and that is that there is a slider in the head to change from eyepiece viewing to camera use. Other than that it is the same format, same exact measurements and same optics as the t490. It uses the same accessories as the t490. This is a great microscope and very much worth the $280.00 I paid for it.

From what I can tell, the T400a is the same as a T490 except that it has a Jetsch head instead of a Siedentopf. Both types work. The body and optics are going to be exactly the same.

I think either of those is a good scope to start with. There are lots of other scopes with that same build and optical quality, but that one has a relatively large number of possible features and accessories because it's a very popular, high volume, model.

Enjoy!

Hello guys, I'm new here and my first question is what are the differences between T490 A and T490 B, Jetsch head instead of a Siedentopf. ? because from where I am there is a great price difference ....

The difference between a and b are eyepieces only. With the a you get 10x eyepieces. With the b you get 10x and 20x eyepieces. That is yhe only difference.

Yes. You can purchase a dark field condenser from Amscope or make a dark field stop for the filter holder on the brightfield condenser.
