Leitz stereo microscope

#1 Post by smollerthings » Sat Oct 02, 2021 5:13 pm

So I found this cute fellow and bought it locally:

Even if it is a student stereo microscope for its era, the build quality is very very good.
The main knob is somewhat tough, I will disassemble it for a revision tomorrow.

That looks very smart indeed … presumably little-used

Nice purchase !

For that era of stereo Leitz seems to be king. I guess they were the Wild of their day, so to speak. Before they became Wild in general I mean. Definitely on the eventually-buy-one list for me.

Anybody knows the name of this model?

I bought it as a gift for a kid and now I am thinking to keep it for me

In numbers stereo microscopes were their main product then, but not for scientific use but for workshop and machine tool use. Mechanical design and manufacturing it top notch and the models with inclined observation tubes are nice to use for common tasks today. Our group as a couple of them, living in their small brown wooden boxes.

Quick question as I am cleaning this stereo microscope: Do dovetails always need grease? The dovetails don't seem to have grease on and it works pretty well. Should I put a thin layer or leave it as is?

Thanks!

Since they don' t move a lot they don't necessarily need lubrication as in a machine tool. A very light smear of grease or oil won't harm on the other way. A drop is already much too much.

Thanks Bob, I dabbed a piece of paper in oil and gently passed it on the surface.

This old slide was on the stereo microscope, from the last student that used it I presume. This made me very happy for some reason.
