Zeiss PMIII?

#1 Post by woyjwjl » Fri Apr 29, 2022 6:56 pm

Stumbling upon this, as a BHS user, which is completely new, ask for help:

1. Does the condenser contain DIC function?

3. Is $2700 worth it?

thank!

Weird to see one with infinity corrected Zeiss Jena objectives, plus a few Zeiss west ones labelled Opton. Unusual scope.

You're right, I did misread it. I guess that Jena used identical styling for their older GF infinity objectives and GF finite objectives.
The phase objectives are a bad sign, since that might point to that being a phase condenser rather than a DIC one, but I am not sure if they mixed and matched (ie recent Nikon dic condensers also have slots for phase annuli). Will have to wait for a zeiss pro to come along.

I don't know Zeiss well enough to be sure, but the two types of upper DIC prisms I've seen have a metal knob to adjust the prism. This slider seems more like a regular holder for an analyzer or tint plate. There was a third type with individual sliders above the objectives - but those aren't seen here either.

In addition, the DIC condensers I've seen for the two earlier (single upper sliding prism) had tell-tale arrows showing the prism orientation on their upper surface - not seen in this example. My take is that it is likely a phase scope, not DIC. It looks to be in good shape, but $2700 should buy something like a Zeiss Standard 18 or WL scope complete with transmitted DIC IMO.

This microscope comes with an achromat-aplanatic BF-Ph-DF condenser type V Z. So to answer your question, no the condenser does not have DIC function (only phase and darkfield). Cosmetically the microscope looks very nice, and assuming internally there is no delamination and other optics issue this would be a superb project stand to build upon (if I were to buy it I'd probably ask to buy it without the objectives and condenser). I doubt you can sell it for 2700 USD but feel free to prove me wrong.

Thank you for your replies, you are right, there is actually a camera inside this complex machine .....
I've decided to give up on the purchase.

By the way, there are two types of phase contrast spotting scopes on the market, U-PCD and U-PCD2 and CX PCD
What is the difference between these two besides NA?

And are both of them suitable for BHS?
