Bausch and Lomb 7801 vd microscope with a Budd base
Bausch and Lomb 7801 vd microscope with a Budd base
I have a Bausch and Lomb 7801 vd microscope with a Budd base and additional Nikon assemblies. I want to use it but it seems to be missing parts and didn't come with a manual/instructions. Here are photos of what I have. Does anyone know how to setup the Nikon F adapter ? How am I supposed to light the subject? Is there a base to punt the Budd chassis to? Did this originally come with a stage that is missing; and if so can I make a substitute to replace it? The lens is a Gaertner 60 m/m EFL.
If anyone out there has any suggestions or tips, it would be greatly appreciated

That 7801 VD is most likely a serial # not a model #. There isn't a lot of info. around for older industrial microscopes such as that. That one looks like an old Monozoom or Monozoom type of microscope. There are some more knowledgeable about B & L than I who might be able to help more.

This looks like a custom setup that uses an older b&l tubus as one component. The zoom optic is an eyepiece, similar to one made by Rolyn. I am unfamiliar with the objective but 60mm ef is about 4 or 5x. No cover glass would be warranted.
The Nikon F was an advanced camera system in the 1960s, but the housing may have been to hold a light, not sure exactly. The whole thing looks to be mounted in a swing arm to get around large immovable objects perhaps.

I have a Nikon FG 20 so I'm familiar with the F mount. I ll see if there's a light that there in accessories on ebay or some nikon forums. Also what's a tubu?

The tubus is just the body tube. It looks like from a monocular scope.

If I'm missing a stage, what s the best way to light an object like a wasp sting or a cactus thorn? My magnification range is between 50x-200x.
Do I light from the top, bottom or side? Are the new modern LED ring lights something to look into for evenly lighting the subject? Is there a source for aftermarket stages;
should I build my own?

Regarding light from top, bottom, or side, the answer is yes.
And I would design my own stage using led lighting. One tip. When observing opaque specimens it is handy to have both a black and a white stage pad to put the specimen on. Some things look better with a black background while others look better with white. What a delightful project.
Enjoy. Greg

Is there significance to the angle of the base below the objective lens? It goes at an opposite angle to that of most stages I've seen.

Is there a calculator that converts mm to 4 or 5x ojective magnification? Also are Gaertner EFL lenses interchagable on the same microscope, if I wanted something with greater optical zoom? Would any other brands of lensese use the same mount?

Hmm 50mm is more like 2x now that I think about it.

Is there any way I can get specs on the bauch and lomb tubu I have? Is there any useful resource like electrotanya is for old electronics?

You might try looking for some old catalogs .but the B&l part I can see is just a metal tube with a rack and pinion. The rest of this apparatus is a custom construction. I don't think the slanted part is a stage. I don't think this scope has or was meant.to.have a stage. It looks more like you move scope o er to the inspection site.
