Acquired a few new scopes.

#1 Post by einman » Fri Oct 09, 2015 2:51 am

Recently acquired another B&L Stereo zoom mounted on an R-stand. It came with the trinoc option as well as a host of accessories. A great find! It is both optically and cosmetically perfect. The clarity and resolution is incredible given the cost and era.

I can't say enough about the clarity and precision of the B&L 7 given the prices you can get them for on E-bay. They EASILY exceed any Amscope/Omax up to and including the ZM-1T ( which I sold recently). Unfortunately most of the PODS offered on E-bay have been used in the electronic industry, exposing them to solder fumes etc which tends to cloud the optics. However, if you can find one mounted on a biological stand then odds are it is in much better shape optically. It is a gamble and can take some time finding a perfect stand but once you do you can appreciate the optics and why it dominated the industry during its era. They are still being used in labs. A recent documentary of "Ants and Men" by E.O Wilson showed B&L Stereozooms in several labs still today.

In addition I acquired an Olympus BH-2 with a set of D-plan objectives. I replaced the Dplan 4X and the Dplan 40X with a DplanApo 40X and an Splan 100/0.95X dry. This stand is quite heavy compared to comparable Leitz stands. Though I dont think the Dplan objectives are quite as good as the comparable Leitz Plan objectives.

I will post pictures soon.. the wife wants the computer for video games. LOL

einman,

I am looking for a 1.5x (not 2x or 0.5x) ancillary lens for Bausch and Lomb Stereozoom 7. If you have one that you don't need, please kindly PM me. Thank you!

Here is the new Stereo zoom 7 and Olympus. I have included my other SZ7 for comparison. One R stand has base illumination while the new one does not.

Great photos!
I especially like the BH-2. That was the workhorse scope in the last lab I worked in, would love to have one for home use.

I have wanted an Olympus BH-2 for years but they were always a bit costly for me. This one was not.

Thanks for the pictures. A very nice set of high quality instruments. Should keep your wife busy for a while making beautiful covers for them (color coded? monogrammed with the make of scope?) :) .

Well..She made some covers for Charles recently. She was a bit frustrated at the fact she did not have the scopes in her possession to make adjustments. So they seem very large but Charles can comment on them when he gets them. Now she is thinking of making them and selling them on E-bay. Though I did notice someone else has already started doing that. The difference is she wants to offer "custom" designs where you select the fabric and material etc. Not sure how that will work. I am, quite frankly, not interested. Too any other hobbies. As long as she makes them for me I am content!! She could monogram or embroider them but..give I am constantly exchanging scopes via selling and buying it would be a wasted effort. Better to just have some Unlabeled covers.

Nice scopes!

I saw your other thread speaking of the covers that your wife makes. Have you/she considered adding windows using the stuff they use for boat covers? Might help with you wife's boredom with ripstop as well. :)

Is this the about going price for BH-2s?

That one has a mixture of Zeiss and Nikon objectives with only one Splan Olympus. The Splan 40X is a great objective but I cant vouch for the others using BH-2 eyepieces etc. You should be able to get one with all Olympus objectives for that price if you watch cloely enough.

So..my search has been rewarded. And it is most likley over at this point. My search henceforth will be for parts only. Though I have most of those as well.

Here is my latest. I bought this at a percentage of its worth given the accessories etc. I will discuss those later. These are quick photos. I need to go through it and clean it up. Then I will post better pics and explanations as to why this microscope has been referred to as the best "Finite" microscope made.

IT IS HUGE!

It has the 10X/26 widefield eyepieces which are quite rare and yield awesome images and FOV.

More to come..I have to catch my breath from dancing around. LOL

Well not in my case. When I make a purchase I sell another one. So I do not accumulate too much. Eddie can attest to that.

A comparison of size!

I actually sold 3 scopes to buy this one.

The head allows for the mounting of both a video camera and a DSLR or 2 DSLR's etc. In addition it came with a variable eyepiece tube which allows for 5X - 12.x mag in the phototube with the twist of a knurled knob.

I have cleaned the lenses and the optics are superb. I compared the Leitz PLan Fluotar to an Olympus 40X/0.85 Dplanapo and it is comparable despite the lower na.

That is an add-on for the future.
