Orthoplan 2 Aristoplan

#1 Post by jean-marc » Thu Dec 29, 2022 9:12 am

I am a lucky one to own an Leitz Orthoplan 2, aka an Aristoplan.
I bought it at a very good price since 15 years now. They are microscope from the middle of the 80'. It works as it was new, and after many tests with recent microscopes, I can say that it was able to beat many of well known brand microscopes. So you have understand, that I am very proud of this microscope, and perhaps not totally objective
Year after year I equiped and modified the microscope, now I can tell it is near as I wished.
So, it works in brightfield, darkfield (dry and immersion oil), phase contrast, DIC (Leitz ICT), and fluorescence.
Halogen and xenon lamp were changed by LED, and I can now use fluo and DIC together.
I added in the stand, the flash lamp of a speedlight. The speedlight and so the flash, is triggered by the Canon 600D camera on the top of the variophot. With this system I am able to freeze the fastest protozoan.
The variophot is an amazing quadrocular head, with a continous magnification changer.
It hold on the other photoport a color astro camera to take videos on laptop.

That is one impressive microscope, both in size and quality! Thanks for sharing the photos. Look forward to seeing your photos and videos in the "Pictures and Videos" section. I am sure you have some impressive contributions to make.

Hello Jean-Marc,

I saw a post that you had from some time ago on photomacrography.net in which you described a modification of your microscope for DIC. Here is the post: https://www.photomacrography.net/forum/ ... an#p102149. Is the microscope that you show in this post the one you modified? I admire your bravery in doing this, since as you said it was irreversible!

Hello Tim,

Thank you, you have a very good memory, yes it is the same microscope. The modification was stressful but worth it.
Now the microscope is near finished

Congratulations, Jean-Marc. You've made a number of clever modifications to an already-outstanding microscope. I don't believe I've ever seen or heard of another Aristoplan so complete.

Are the upper DIC prisms you're using from Olympus reflected finite?

Hi peter,

Thank you.

I am working actually on an Aristoplan for a friend, it is full ICT equiped with all Leitz prisms. The coating of the 2 mirrors inside the microscope stand are oxided, I will change them.
But you are right, I never found an Aristoplan full equiped as mine actually.
For the objectives prisms, I bought two sorts :
Olympus reflected finite as you said
Nikon turret with 4 prisms in it for finite microscope two, I guess an Labophot 1 or Optiphot 1.
I don't know which one I use in my objective turret, I guess the 2 brands, beacause they are not similar.
