FOR STARTERS

#1 Post by Nubee-70 » Wed Dec 20, 2023 5:27 am

As a youth (c. 1965) I received a Tasco Microscope with sample slides. Had a lot of explorative fun with it. Many years later, it was dismantled for other optical experimentations.

About 30 years ago I found a similar scope in a Salvation Army rubbish bin (yes, I was a bit of a scrounger then). It is a Zuiho (100x, 200x, and 300x) if they are that at all. The mirror was missing, and optics was so dirty that I could not see any light through them. So I pulled it apart and cleaned it up as best I could with what I had. I used a 12v car globe with a 9v adaopter for a light source. Made a heavy base to jam the scope into, and a coloured filter slide (using cellophane film).

As you can see, the optics are still dirty/damaged. But I still had lots of fun with it at the time.

A few weeks ago I pulled it out of a plastic bag to have another look through it. Here is a water creature from the dish of a flower pot.

This inspired me to have another go at microscopy. This time I have more time, as a retiree, and able to buy a reasonable light microscope to replace this one.

A few weeks ago a friend loaned me his stereo microscope Kyowa_SZM, 0.6x - 3x. the veiw seemed cloudy, and was still a bit cloudy after I cleaned the exposed lens with a camera lens cleaner. I am not game to clean inside.
Nevertheless I experimented with trying to take photos through the eyepiece.
I believe the following photos will explain better than I can describe in words...

It finally came for Xmas.
Received the Optico XSZ-107T Trinocular microscope through the post. Everything very well packed and arrived safely.
It has the following:
WF10x/20 High Eyepoint Eyepieces 23mm (Pair).
Infinity-plan objectives set 4x, 10x, 40x, and 100x.
Optico GT5 - 5 Mp digital microscope camera.
Capture Ver 2.4 microscopy image and reporting software.

The screen shows dust particles somewhere between camera and its tube adaptor (image rotates when I turn the camera). The puffer does not shift the dirt, so I will have to try something else.

Decided to do a simple comparison between the four objectives using the small print of an email on A4 copy paper.

How did it turn out?

From what I have just been reading, I believe the previous post pictures show that I have bungled the images up. Especially by the last two images of 400x and 1000x.
I just read that I need to adjust both the iris diaphram and condensor position after each time I select a different objective.

Later, when I have more time (after Christmas visitors), I will test this out.

In the meantime, can anybody give me further hints / tips to using my microscope?

I think you have made an excellent start with the new microscope
… methodical tests, using an easily recognisable specimen *

Well done !

.
As you evidently have an iPhone, my tip would be to grab these two very useful Apps:

Thank you MichaelG. Interesting apps and resources. They should help me a great deal.
Earlier today I came across across something similar to your suggested apps. It also has interactive tutorials. But I think your resources may be more insightful.
