New Microscope. Help identify?

#1 Post by NicoRivas » Thu May 28, 2020 7:49 pm

I was just handed down this Carl Zeiss microscope. Anyone know which model it is? After some research I was thinking possibly winkel?

If anyone has a manual on how to use it or has a good explanation that would also be helpful! I’ve used microscopes before but have never seen the adapter in the back for example! I understand on cable is for the light but the other?

Any help is welcome!

You have a jigsaw puzzle on your microscope table too! They are cumbersome.

Anyway, nice scope!

A jewel of a microscope! a trinocular Zeiss Standard GFL with what seems to me: an optovar including a filter slot, a phase-contrast - interference-contrast condenser, an analog camera adapter (obsolete), and an external powerful (60W I believe) illuminator, connected via a T adapter for a fiber optic illuminator. If indeed it can do DIC, that is a rare and valuable machine. Even for phase contrast alone it is very good.
Cannot identify the objectives, they might be Planachromat or phase-contrast.

Welcome Nico,

You have a very nice Zeiss GFL with DIC. There is the old style DIC single beam slide in the top intermediate piece and the old style DIC condenser with the white arrow. I don't know what the black cable is but the 12V 60 lamp will need a power regulator.

Wow! Thanks!!

It’s beautiful but a lot more than I know how to handle. Even the plugs seem to be out of my element. Thanks for the scope ID. I guess it’s time for me to start doing my own homework so I can get some real use out of it !

I’m assuming that with a different adapter I should be able to connect my own camera to it as well?

You will need a 12V Zeiss power regulator like this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/CARL-ZEISS-MOD ... Sw6f1esIVR
The phototube will allow you to use your DSLR but you may need to find a proper mount for your model of camrea.

I will also send you an instruction sheet for the DIC system and your 12v 60W lighting system.

Nice microscope!!

Looks like you're quite lucky because you have a complete DIC system on an otherwise great Zeiss scope. After you go over Charles' documentation on the DIC system please let us know how you like it and post some DIC imagery if you can. That would be exciting!

Hello!

I unfortunately have not gotten to use this microscope at all. As such, due to current situations and also lack of use I was planning on selling it. Before posting it elsewhere I thought I would ask those of you here that were kind enough to help me last year if anyone was interested in purchasing!

If so, feel free to message me! If not, I'll probably post it by the end of this week.

Be helpful (for both you and those who might want to contact you) to let people know where you are located and the condition of the optics (especially the DIC prisms).

Fair! Located in South Florida. I cant exactly say the condition of the pieces. It has been well taken care of by the lab at my previous university and has since just sat on my shelf. to my untrained eye everything looks in pretty great condition.

If it would help I could post some more photos on here tomorrow.

Best if you can take pictures through the top slider and then through the DIC prisms in the condenser.

In my very limited Zeiss experience, two of two upper prisms had some delamination. One that didn't matter much. Another that was noticeable at lower magnifications. In my case, all the condenser prisms were OK and only a few objectives had minor delamination.

The objectives and eyepieces might have some delamination but those are easier to replace.

South Florida is good! Should be interested folks not too far away. And the Zeiss are light enough that even with extra bubble wrap and double boxing you can send it most anywhere in the US for not too much money.
