Help With Light

#1 Post by Keats » Tue Jul 06, 2021 8:25 pm

I am currently looking for micrometeorites. When I look at my samples under a microscope, they look black/dark, even where they are not. What can I do to fix this? I have tried the full range of brightness. I have also tried different surrounding lightings including pitch black. I will attach a picture of a sample under a microscope and from above.

You will need to use incident [epi] illumination, Keats

What you are using is only suitable for translucent specimens.

As a quick test, try holding a bright torch [flashlight] above the specimen stage.

Look for goose neck lighting or LED ring lighting, or just use a flashlight somehow mounted to aim at the sample.

The LED ring light (example pictured here) can be found and not be as expensive as the gooseneck options.

More officially, an epi would be used for metallurgical microscopes. If goes above the objectives below the camera.

Ringlights give a very flat quality of illumination. For many subjects, some shadowing improves the stereomicroscope's imaging ability. Usually a mix of lighting locations and types provide the best quality lighting..
I found these useful as fill lights and for adjustable shadowing when needed. Bright , portable and flexible.

You might consider a stereo microscope for this kind of study.
