Objective Lenses
Objective Lenses
I have room for 4 objectives on my microscope. I’ve decided I do not want to use the 100 for oil. I therefore have 4-10-20-40 and 60 objectives. Which would be the best order to place them. I’m new to this hobby.
Re: Objective Lenses
The common way of mounting the objectives is from low to high power in clockwise direction.
What objectives to mount is influenced by personal preference and usage area.
E.G when viewing botanic cuts i use 4-10-20-40 (4* is my most used one) when viewing pond samples 4-10-20-40 (20* is my most used one here), when doing mounted diatoms I use 10-20-40-60.
60* requires near perfect slides with the specimin mounted very very close to the cover glass, plus a high precision coverglass of EXACT 0.170 +/- 0.05 mm (The Zeiss ones come to mind, the standard ones will often deliver blurry images with 60* [and 40*]objectives)

Re: Objective Lenses
It depends on what you want to look at.
Insets: go down from 20x, 10x, 4x, 2x
protists: go up from 10x, 20x, 40x, 60x

Re: Objective Lenses
You mentioned that you have room for four objectives but listed 5 objectives \
(4,10,20,40,60). The 20x is a very useful objective for things like entomology, not so much the 40x or 60x. The 40x and 60x are good for bacterial and cellular work.
Or you could remove the 10x and use the 4x, 20x, 40x and 60x. It is a good compromise. It's not that unscrewing objectives is a big problem, but I have almost accidentally dropped one because the thread didn't catch the first time.
