daphnia are all dead.

I have slides with ciliates, worms, rotifers, paramecium, etc. On these slides are also daphnia (water fleas), but the daphnia are all dead. Thinking that maybe they were crushed by the cover slip, I viewed the slide without the cover slip with the same result. Any ideas?
