Labophot fine focus shaft replacement - how to remove coarse focus knob

#1 Post by sreynolds » Wed Jan 25, 2023 3:57 pm

I have a Labophot with failed plastic fine focus gear, received replacement gear/shaft from Microscope Solutions, am trying to install shaft. I need help removing the metal cover plate over the coarse focus knob. The instructions I have from here say there is a recess in the edge of the metal cover plate that I can pry from, like this example

but mine has no such recess - just a ding where it looks like somebody tried to remove the plate before. What to do? Does it actually screw on? This is what mine looks like. Thanks.

Hi

In the repain manual it is said that it is fixed with adhesive #616, it seems that it is in the outside border; I don´t know if you have to use heat, acohol, or another type of solvent in the peripheria, and later use a thin screwdiver or metal foil in order to get out that ring.
If you need the reapir manual, I have it, but it´s 18Mb size...

Best regards

+1 It's glued on with something like contact or rubber cement. Get a thin blade under the cover then pry slightly and gently all around under the circumference. Pop it off. Use a dab of a similar not-too-strong adhesive when replacing it.

OK, yes, got a small blade under it and it popped off. Thanks.

Yes, I would like a copy of that manual - I have one that I got here but it could be better - seems to be lacking some images, etc.

I think I will try hot-melt glue on reassembly. Worst case is it won't hold.

Hi Steve

I have checked and the contend of your link is the same than mine....

Here in Europe there are some manufacturers of celulosic glue (Imedio, UHU), that is very easy to disolve with alcohol; I think that it would be better than hot glue for that purpose.

I used CA 'Krazy' glue - just 6 dots - and filed a lttle recess at one spot on the rim of the cover to make it easier to get off next time.
