retrieve specific specimens

#1 Post by Judge » Wed Apr 10, 2024 7:28 pm

I’m attempting to retrieve specific specimens from a slide (Tardigrades, Daphnia, etc.). I tried a pipet but could not do it. Any suggestions are appreciated.

No offence, just practice more.
Do you use chopsticks? Pinch the pipette between two fingers and use your dominant hand to manipulate the pipette with the other being stationary. Do this under a stereomicroscope. This works very well for larger specimens. For smaller ones, you need something more elaborate, such as a micropipette. You can use a needle to clear out the debris around the specimen you wish to pick up.

You might try a small syringe with a blunt-tip needle. A 1 ml. syringe with a 20Ga or 22Ga needle is a handy combination.

Michael G., I am cluless, a 'neoludite regarding links'..but thank you for producing the link for Judge. happy spring'24 to all.. fingerlakes/US 4/8/24 solar eclipse was 'half a dud for us'( at our fingerlakes/U S location).

It was wonderful to view on the south-west horizon an ominous darkness charging to our direction standing outdoors under a full cloud roof. We knew that oval shadow of totality ( an oval about 120 miles wide) was charging our way at over

2000 miles/hour ...I think in a past solar eclipse, writer/poet Annie Dillard described her awe at that 'black circle charging towards her'. I

We experienced the rich ( akin to dark field microscope illumination?) enhanced visual structure of our baneful cloud cover...rivlets, tendrils, ropes of lower cloud deck became obvious with no intense sun insolation for direct above this cloud

blanket. Then the awesome drops in ambient light about us..then that oh so humbling experience of total darkness, nighttime at about?? 3:22pn ET?..and yes a notable drop in ambient temperature..

My dear son and his girl simply imaged the less than eight (8) second cloud break to record the eclipse at about 70% blocked sun. I with all my filters, binocs,( and telescope which i deamed not to employ)..I imaged...nada.

Again, thank you Michael G. for posting link for 'Judge'...(I hope 'Judge might one day 'fix a NYC parking ticket for me?!!)...all the best this spring'24

You are welcome, charlie g

… and I thank you for the notes about the Solar Eclipse
[ it was almost a ‘non-event’ in the U.K. of course ]
