Omax vs Amscope

#1 Post by cpsTN » Sat Dec 19, 2015 6:21 pm

Are Amscope and Omax the same instruments with different names or are they separate companies? They both seem to be the same, I thought it might just be a different label.

cpsTN, check this site;

Maybe from the same manufacturer but (at least these two) not the same scope.

That is quite funny. These are the two scopes I am comparing and why I asked the question. In the case of these two scopes, I prefer the head design of the Omax.

The following is guesswork on my part: I may be wrong, but my guess is that companies like Amscope and Omax don't make the microscopes but buy them from a microscope manufacturer in China and stick their label on them.. So the two brands can easily have identical models made by the same manufacturer with different brand and model numbers. I wouldn't even be sure that the same brand and model of a microscope will not be made by a different manufacturer in a subsequent year.

I see your m500 selling for $140, and these two scopes for $180. Would waiting a bit and getting
a better scope seem more productive? Just saying.......

gekko,

Your given name must be Clair Voyant.

Everything you wrote is absolutely correct.

I thought I could answer the original question in a word, but I guess it takes more.

Gekko and Lorez you are both right but not exactly.

Companies often manufacture (or contract to have manufactured) the same engineered product with different features to attract different customers and to be sold through different outlets. Minor design changes are a lot less expensive than a complete new design and development of a similar product. And yes, companies will switch actual manufacturing sites based on a number of factors but the quality is generally consistent.

CpsTN, that being said and for my purposes I am glad I went with the Amscope. I have never looked thru a “Big Three” so maybe I don't know what I am missing but for the price, I can't complain.

Good luck with your decision.

You're correct. We're to old to know everything.

Rebranding is common in industry. How many cars do we see that are the same body with varying features and options but are obviously the "same" car. The current telescope and my last two are all the same (aside from aperature), but were the same scope.

DALE: Whwn I bought the M500B, I wanted to the binocular version. My wife wanted something too, so I downsized so we could both spend. With the choices I'm considering in this post, I'm simply moving up in features and build quality without a significant increase in price. The Omax looks like the winner here.
