What are lubricants and degreasers to make mechanical parts of a microscope run more smoothly.

Since no one answered yet, I'll stick my neck out: for degreasing I use Zippo lighter fluid. For lubrication, I use grease (consistency depends on applicaton). I never use any kind of oil (simply because in an old microscope book it said never to use oil on a microscope). As far as I know, rack and pinion gears should not be lubricated. Hopefully someone knowledgeable (there are quite a few experts here) will correct and add to my comment.

For a good degreaser, you can use Xylene, mineral spirits, denatured alcohol or even lighter fluid.

For relubing, I like the Nye greases and oils.
