When an objective is called luminescent, is it just a fancier term for brightfield?

No probably not. Luminescence is the emission of light from things that has not been heated. For example fluorescence where you excite the subject and light of another wavelength is emitted. There can also be chemical processes that give luminescence. My guess is that these objectives are particularly suitable for fluorescence meaning can be used for a wide range of wavelength outside the visible range.

In case of a LOMO objective, "luminescence" designation on its shell means the objective does not produce false colors in fluorescence microscopy.
