AO phase condensers
What is the difference between the AO phase condensers cat# 1201 and cat# 1240? Are they the same with just a different cat#? Will a cat# 1240 work on an AO110 for phase microscopy?

The cat.# 1240 is the cat.# for the phase condenser carousel or rotary HOUSING. it has the dovetail for fitting to the series 10 and 20 microscopes. the normal condenser nose, or lens pack that threads into it is the cat.# 1242.
The cat.# 1201 is the cat.# for the condenser nose or lens pack for the next generation phase system made for the series 110/120. the phase condenser housing that it is normally used in is the # 1205, identical to the #1240 except for the dovetail. although the 1240 and 1205 are functionally the same, if fitted with the same annuli and optics the dovetail is sufficiently different that they are not interchangeable.
you could however, use a #1201 in a #1240 housing or use a #1242 in a #1205 housing.

Phil,
Would it be feasible to swap out a dovetail from another condenser that fits an AO110 and put it on a 1240? I figure that I can find a dovetail easier than I can find a 1201.

Probably feasible but not as straightforward as it sounds. The method of attachment is different on each and the mounting flange for the later dovetail is wider than the earlier one. The dovetail on the 1240 is threaded to receive screws from the inside of the carousel housing, so the iris would have to be disassembled in order to remove the dovetail. The base of the housing would then need to be drilled and tapped to receive the later dovetail's mounting screws, installed from the bottom outside the housing.
Later condensers with the correct dovetail that work on a series 100, would be the integrated abbe aspheric # 1970 or a # 1092 condenser mount, occasionally found unadorned but usually with either the # 1087 or # 1201 condenser installed. If you should come across one fitted with the wonderful # 1973 or 1973A 1.4 N.A. achromat aplanat in it, use it. Don't pilfer the dovetail from it's # 1092 mount. Find another one to pilfer.
Obviously, you have been looking for a # 1205 condenser . Remember that most of them would be listed as Reichert, rather than AO.

It's possible to machine either the dovetail or the carrier to allow the different dovetails to fit -- maybe an option for you? Don't know about the match up of phase rings.
