Anyone with a Swift SW350T ?

#1 Post by Malpi » Sat Mar 28, 2020 4:19 pm

I have looked at a review of this on Amazon and the comments suggesed that it is not possible to do darkfield on it.
Is this correct ?
The questioner specifically asks about a filter but then talks about the condenser So some confusion ?

Perhaps they mean not a darkfield condenser, but an occulting stop in the filter holder,,
(does it have one ? that didnt get answered and I cant see one in pics online)
,,,might still be possible ??

This is a snippet of the comments page :-

I suppose I can add an additional filter in the condenser folder for darkfield illumination?
Also, are there 60x dry objectives for this?

I think it is not possible, many people ask the manufacturer about this option but only keep silent.

Sorry can’t.
Thanks.

Darkfield using stops with low power objectives should be possible on all transmitted light microscopes.

I have the 380t and it has a filter holder for those little plastic dark field filters. You can't go by the seller comments because they don't know what they are talking about. The 380t had similar comments saying darkfield wasn't possible even though it has the filter holder option.

Thanks micro,
I must be going blind I did not see that, do you have a link to it please.

PS I am considering a 380 also, so that is useful information.

Thanks for that link, yes, without a doubt, it does show a "Swinging Filter Holder"
I know my eyes are not young anymore but they couldnt miss that !

Now that is Amazon states-side, whereas I am on this side of the pond with AmazonUK etc.,
and deffo no filter holder in the pics of 350 and 380 that I was seeing,,, so further investigation needs be done after my evening meal ,,,

Many thanks for your great input.

All becomes mysterious : a Diaphragm becomes a Swinging Filter Holder !

I had assumed the diaphragm (in my viewing of AmazonUK) to be an Iris.
Has it been a model upgrade or just a different name for the same thing ?

It seems that there are not many owners of Swifts on the forum.
Which may indicate that I should look to other manufacturers for my next purchase !

Just get something else because the swift models are more expensive now anyway. When I bought mine it was a good deal but now since they cost more you might as well get a more well known brand.

Purchased a Swift 380T thinking it had a filter holder as they included a blue filter. However it had an iris diaphragm instead. No biggy as I'm pleased with this scope. Will try fitting it with patches & polarizing filters eventually.

Egads inspected bottom of iris diaphragm & there is a pin sticking out of bottom that you use to slide out the filter holder. Looked & looked before & did not see this. Now will be easy to add filters.

I didn't think the 380t had a filter holder until I looked for a iris diaphragm with filter holder for Swift on Ebay. Found one with picture & compared with mine. Same thing. The slide out holder has small metal nub that sticks down. Originally thought it was a fastener for the assembly. Pushed sideways & out it came. Have ordered polarizing filters for filter holder & to go under head. Guess I'll find out if LED lighting will work with this next?

I am beginning to think that I should buy one (just to find out / explore, they are well priced here), write an "in depth" review (with pictures !) of Swift filter capabilities,,,
and then sell it, and its copyright, to Swift.
I wonder how much they would pay me for it

Hi Shirley, welcome aboard,
I see in your post in "botanic cross sections" that you have returned a 350 and ordered a 380, I would be most interested to hear what you have discovered about the differencies between these two, their pro&cons.

Hi Malpi! I’m still expecting the 380, but i will tell you about the differences when i get it! Although, they’re not really different other than how they look like, the 380 is somewhat “advanced” and Oliver told me to get the SW380T but it’s too expensive :( but since its only for hobby then i think i can do enough with the SW380B! I will be uploading images once i get the trick of how to use this forum! :D

As a detached observer of this discussion ... I am confused

The ebay clip shows the significant difference between the 380B and 380T
B=Binocular vs T=Trinocular

... but there is no mention of 350

Am I missing something ?

.

Edit: curiosity took me to this Swift page, which features the variants:
http://swiftoptical.com/products/swift-basics

and also to this Youtube video : https://youtu.be/w6q-Z4qOIOk
where the reply to a question by Michael Fuchs is interesting [but not very detailed]

P.S. I have just downloaded the two 9 page user manuals, and suggest that you do the same
... a side-by-side comparison is more revealing than switching between adverts.

Nice find ! I had looked at several Swift ytvids but missed that one (or maybe I saw it and missed the most relevant bit !)

At 1:10 to 1:16 it answers my original post/question/raison d'etre of this topic :-
The 350T does indeed have a swing out filter holder :!: that would take a dark-field thingie.

* 6seconds that may cause me to raid my piggybank

Thanks to all who participated in this little saga.

lol sorry i just compared the 380b and 380T that i forgot about the 350b (the one i had) :? , but believe me i have searched and looked everything from the sky to earth and below the sea and there seems to be “not much” information OR reviews of the Swift, except mine here about the 350B, it was really good! i really liked it although some objectives were dirty and other stuff. However, the review that led me to buy the SW350B was this one:
https://mymicroscopicworld.com/microsco ... wift-sw350
It was the ONLY one i found from DAYS and WEEKS of research for a REAL review of Swift.
the other website that has a really good comparison page is the OMAX, something Swift should have.

Also, thank you for the links! i have them.

i just bought a 350T in Canada and it has a filter holder. There's a little 1/16 pin on the underside of the aperture assembly. You can move it to move the filter holder part way out so you can grab it with your fingers and rotate it all the way open.
