GoPro UHD Actioncam on a microscope? Adapter?

#1 Post by Tobias Claren » Fri Mar 03, 2023 9:08 am

Hello.

Are there adapters to use a GoPro Hero (eg 8) on a microscope?
I found only one website, but it offers only converted GoPro.
An extra GoPro just for this purpose I did not want to buy.
When I press the Hero 8 on the eyepiece, I see what seems to be a sharp image, but only a small spot in the center of the image.

It would be ideal if the adapter could do without its own insert eyepiece.
Something that is fixed to the tube.

Possibly a cheap plastic adapter with a lens (different quality levels) would do.
Something that you would find on Amazon, Ebay or AliExpress for "$10" postage free. If it were offered.
Something that someone could develop as a 3D print.
But no one offers it.

Thank you.

How does your Hero 8 differ from a Hero 7 Pro?

Exactly the page I meant ("I found only one website, but it offers only converted GoPro.").
I have seen the original in German.
But they (or back-bone.ca) want to sell a whole Hero:
"Conclusion: We really liked how the H7PRO, the modified version of GoPro’s Hero7 Black action camera made by Back-Bone (www.back-bone.ca), performed in our tests."

I don't know the exact differences between Hero 7 and Hero 8.
Hero 8 arguably has greatly improved digital de-shake.
But it seems to me that this company "Back-Bone" rebuilds the Hero 7.
So sells ready converted cameras.

I don't want to rebuild my Hero 8 either.
I still want to be able to use it normally, but also use it on the microscope.

Apparently, you can no longer remove the front lens of a Hero 8 which may be why the above company makes a c-mount microscope camera out of a Hero 7.

It is something I have done rather little, but I could imagine that the best you can do is afocal projection – which is what you have tried – from the microscope eyepiece on to the GoPro lens. How far you have to hold the camera above the eyepiece and what kind of image the camera will capture depends on both. Since I also do not have yours (either one or both), I think I am the wrong nothing to answer.
