I have just successfully installed Icy on my M1 Mac mini

… that’s the first ‘small step’ completed … now starts the journey.

Thanks for the pointer. While attractive, Icy's home page failed to quickly convey (to me)
why one would choose it over e.g. Fiji or ImageJ, to which it is related,

Assuming that I can ever learn to drive it, I’m inclined to at least give it a try
… but don’t hold your breath

It installed easily and quickly on the the M1 Mac mini running Ventura [*]
… the machine is very fast; it’s me that’s slow !

the Oracle JDK that’s linked in the Icy instructions failed to install, but this newer one worked fine
