Phase contrast is a powerful technique in the right hands. I wonder if part of the popularity of DIC is just that expensive equipment can be substituted for some of the artistry required to sap the most out of phase.

I don't think DIC is popular in the sense that it is common.

I do think that to get the most out of any illumination technique (or combination of techniques) requires that all the ducks be in a neat row.

i.e. one should fine tune all stages of the setup at each session.
