Easter egg

#1 Post by Sjeiti » Sat Apr 16, 2022 10:02 am

Since it's easter; I found this one that seems to be coming from this egg (?) https://vimeo.com/699987247
I have no idea what this is but I've seen them before, they are mostly too busy buzzing around to get a clear picture (like these yellow ones https://vimeo.com/681039687).

What is going on here? Is it dead? can ciliates shed their exosceleton?

gr

Ron

ps: sorry about the other ciliate photobombing, he wouldn't go away

The greenish fellow, and the little yellow guys in the second video, appear to be dinoflagellates. Some dinoflagellates do form resting cysts (egglike structures, enabling the organism to become dormant, when living conditions are poor), and it is possible that the transparent bowls around it are the remains of a cyst from which it recently emerged. They could also be unrelated artifacts left by another organism.

The ovoid organism swimming around in the first video is the ciliate Lembadion, and has no connection to the greenish guy.
