I'm newbie from Singapore... My nick is dude9985 or call me Edwin Kor if you like.

I'm always fascinated with exploring microscopic world...and now I have more time and would like to learn and share with all of you here.

Btw, I'm interested in ""OMAX 40X-2500X LED Binocular Compound Microscope
with 5MP USB Camera + Slide Preparation Kit
plus Blank Slides & Lens Paper + Book + Cleaning Kit"" a package and it price is:-
USD329.50 + freight charge USD30.34 + import charges USD26.06 Total: USD385.90

Any advice ...or opinion ? Please note that I don't have much experiences in microscope.

Thanks to all my lovely friends in this forum. :D

Welcome to the forum, Edwin.

I suggest searching your university surplus sales. Sometimes you can purchase better microscopes (Zeiss, Nikon, Olympus, ect) for the same cost there.

Also, it helps to reading about microscopy and decide which lighting method you like. Popular ones are oblique (free DIY), phase (special equipment needed), and darkfield (special equipment needed). DIC would be out of your budget and is not easy for beginners.

Hi Dude9985,

if this is your first incursion in microscopy then a new out of the box microscope is probably a good idea.
Not sure how useful that book will be - but it may serve as an introduction.
I would suggest however that rather than the binocular you get the trinocular. It is much more convenient.
Later on as you progress and learn to get the most out of your microscope you can start to think about your next one.

As you can see the price is practically the same.

Hi Edwin, welcome :)

I got my Omax just over a week ago and I am very happy with the quality of the microscope. The optics are crisp and clear and the overall build is sturdy. However, the camera that came with it (i got the 14MP) was not very good. I got way better results taking video and pictures straight through the eyepiece using my cellphone.

I have never used one of the bigger brands like Zeiss or Nikon, so have no idea how it compares with these.
