Hello from Spain.
Hello from Spain.
I am a retired electronic engineer who dedicates a lot of free time to science. Although I have a couple of optical microscopes, what I use the most is a Philips XL30 scanning electron microscope that I bought second-hand two years ago. 18 years ago I bought my first SEM microscope, a Philips 525, on eBay for a ridiculous $ 600. It took me six months of my free time to get it up and running, but it gave me great satisfaction for 15 years. When I couldn't take it anymore, I bought another SEM, more modern although a little more expensive.
Although it is not the only use that I give to the microscope during the last months I am dedicating much of his time to obtain images of diatoms, both living and fossil. I travel many places in Spain obtaining samples of the waters and samples of the diatom fossil deposits. Naturally I am delighted to share samples.
I guess these forums are not closed to electron microscopes.
Best regards
PD

Welcome Gmeiro.
SEM in your basement! I think that is amazing. Very glad you have chosen Diatoms as your subject.
Fascinating image

This is the first microscope I had, a Philips SEM 525. It was originally from 1985 and I took it back in 2019 because by then I was spending more time repairing it than using it.
And this is the current microscope. A Philips-FEI XL30. I bought it in Vienna (Austria). Installing it and getting it ready also took a long time. Fortunately, I already had experience with these devices.
Salud!!

Amazing work, Gmeiro!
We know you are an electrical engineer already (who else on earth would have a SEM at home), did you have to show off that many circuit boards and wire connections

Hi members. I am Sonia Jhonson, from Reykjavik. I am a newbie here and interested in the discussion of the microbehunter. Being a blogger in the field of science, this thread is quite important for me and because of that reason I would like to gain knowledge from here.
