Leitz Diaplan Microscope

#1 Post by Derek » Sat Nov 12, 2022 4:33 pm

Hello everybody hope you can help this total novice.

I have a Leitz Diaplan Microscope which I purchased from a local auction knowing nothing about
microscopes. It was intended to be used to check parasites on some inherited koi fish I now have.

I have now discovered that the nose turret and objectives are
missing. Could anyone please advise what the best corse of action
should be. Will other nose turrets fit from the Leitz range. Is there a
part number etc.Or should I just bin it and hide my embarrassment.

On reflection I should probably have bought a new microscope, but I have
enjoyed learning about this one so I am reluctant to give up on it yet.

Regards Derek

The Diaplan if properly fitted out is a very powerful instrument that you could expand if the hobby interests you beyond checking on the fish. Whether to get something entirely different or fit it out depends I think on how much you paid for it, and whether it will really be in good shape if you do purchase objectives and a turret. I know there are some turrets available on eBay... But first, are you sure that the only missing bits are the turret and objectives? Eyepieces? Condenser? Maybe post some pics of what you have and folks can let you know what might appear to be missing. Unfortunately buying things like turrets and objectives separate from stands starts to really add up fast...

Objectives that would be usable for you come in a number of types. The Diaplan used 160 mm tube length long barrel objectives. Assuming you stick with the brand, Leitz NPL Fluotars are what you would probably want to get, unless you have a phase contrast condenser, in which case you may want NPL phase objectives. Stay away from the Leitz 170 mm tube length objectives.

You got the stand with condenser and bright-field top lens, binoculars and eye-pieces.
What is missing are the nose-piece, lamp-house and objectives, maybe the object stage.

The nose-piece is of that type:

Those from other Leitz models to not fit.

The lamp-house is of that type:

Some lamp-units from other Leitz microscopes like the Ortholux II will fit but not with the Diaplan's build-in electronics.
The electronics are a quite critical part of the 'Diaplan. Check it and make sure it works.

NPL Fluotars 160/ are what is recommended as objectives.

The Diaplan was at the high-end of the Leitz range and is very rewarding.
