Binocular or trinocular?

#1 Post by HobbyMekanik » Sun Sep 26, 2021 8:35 pm

Can anyone tell if it is possible to put a trinocular for photography on this binocular Leitz LaborLux?
Thanks!

Almost certainly

Have you studied “the excellent leitz microscopes with black enamel finish” ?

Available here, and many other locations

Have you had a look under the cap on top of your tube head?

I was wondering about that too, Bob
… I can’t find any reference to a binocular head with that layout.

No, the scope is on a buy/sell site here in Sweden. So I have not had a look at it.

The pictures I’ve seen of Leitz scopes for camera shows a slightly different tube for connecting a camera…
So the main question is still, is this microscope possible to use with a camera…? And if so, is such a camera connecting tube/mount possible to find?

Yeah probably go ahead and get that scope though think of the mad scientist feelings with that illuminator setup

I'm sure it's possible to mount a trinocular head but that is a beautiful vintage scope to be treasured so be careful in your trials.

That might me an old transmitted fluorescence design. Is that a 12v. 100 watt illuminator? I have some older Leitz fluorescence filters here that have little handles for inserting, leading me to believe that with a certain Leitz design, the filters were inserted individually, rather than being rotated in-out on a carousel, as was the case with some designs.

Since it would be a transmitted light fluorescence outfit this would make sense as part of the filtering is below and part above the slide.

@HobbyMekanik:
The usual bino tubes don't have this chimney on top of the tube head so it is likely that it is a trino tube. But I'm not really knowledgable with Leitz microscopes, don't like the look of the triagular foot. Generally trino tubes are easier to find for Leitz instruments than for Zeiss ones. In case this proves not to be a trino tube: A single trino tube will not be much cheaper than a complete microscope, but if you have to buy a second microscope you will get some useful parts too that can be used on either stand.

It looks like there are some optical accesories in the lower part of that wide vertical optical tube. Part may be image splitting but part may be a barrier filter location?

It’s probably worth browsing carefully through this lot:

You might contact Wolfgang, owner of this website: https://leitz-ortholux.de/
He might even be interested in swapping collector parts against useful parts.

It's a truly marvelous scope regardless. It certainly looks trinocular, and with a little inovation you could make a temporary tube while searching for the right part, even if you had to use a toilet paper tube, although that sort of thing might be viewed as a great insult to its lovely design.
