Has anyone used or owned a Filar micrometer such as this one on Ebay?

I wonder how useful it would be...

I've never used one. If you want to measure something under the microscope, they are useful (eyepiece graticules may be an alternative). I can tell you what I do: I take images of my stage micrometer with each objective I use and these remain as my reference for size (magnification) for any photomicrograph taken subsequently with that objective.

Hi Gekko,
Thanks for the hint!... I have a stage micrometer standard here I can use... I just wondered if these things are really useful to the average person.. Some of them command large amounts of cash on Ebay...

Or you can use a free software package with your calibration slide.
The package is DigCam from Science 4 All

It is simple to calibrate and use.
Basically, you measure your calibration slide once for each objective.
Then take your microscope photo and drag a line across the object to be measure. The measurement appears at the end of the line.
