An interesting patent [for microscope objective]

#1 Post by MichaelG. » Thu Aug 13, 2020 1:27 pm

It seems we have a few admirers of the optical designers’ art so I thought it worth sharing this:

US patent 3925910 by Olympus does not simply reference ‘prior art’ but gives a detailed description of how the design improves upon German patent 1213140 by Leitz.

note: 1213140 is available in English as 1020030

All three documents are available on Espacenet

... Very interesting, for those who are that way inclined

That's one expensive lens design...
They're using 2 fluorite elements in the first embodiment, and 3(!) in the second. If they had redesigned it in 1975 (That's when Schott came out with their first ED glass FK01), that would have made an well corrected and affordable LWD objective.

... Yes, that’s fine, if you don’t want to use Espacenet
