Leitz 170mm TL to 160mm TL microscope conversion

#1 Post by henryr » Thu Jan 14, 2021 2:39 am

In 2015 I posted about my effort to convert my Dialux 170mm TL scope to 160mm TL. The reason was I bought the 170mm TL Dialux stand with no head, eyepieces or objectives and I had 160mm eyepieces and objectives.

Below are details of the conversion using a 160mm TL head.

Since the Leitz 160mm TL trinocular head was made for 160mm TL microscope stands it seemed obvious that I needed to know the dimensional differences between 170mm TL and 160mm TL stands. And it seemed a key difference might be the dimension from the stand's head mounting surface to the turret objective mounting surface.

I knew that the dimension of my Dialux 170mm TL was 40.19mm, so I needed to know the dimension of a Leitz 160mm TL scope. I posted that question on a few microscope forums and got the following replies: "Dialux 22-EB, Laborlux S, are both 47mm" and "Leitz collectors assured me that the 47mm dimension from the top surface to the face of the turret objective mounting surface that the head rests on are a general feature for all the small white 160 mm stands w/o tube lenses, including the Dialux 20".

Those answers made it clear that only an approximately 7mm spacer was needed between the head and the surface it rests on. It worked out well and images look pretty good. And this is how I arrived at the final spacer thickness: 47mm - 40.19mm = 6.807mm = .268". Below are some related photos. And has anyone else done this type of conversion?

Thanks,
henryr

Henryr Cordial greetings.
Sir.
I urgently need your valuable experience
I just got a very nice dialux that has the focus very stuck and also jumps.
In those circumstances I decided to dismantle it completely ,but before I documented a little and fortunately I found your work with the focus block.
But I have a drawback and a problem that possibly you can clear...is the following.
When I installed the focus block the stop pawl button does not allow me to lower the stage casting. Upwards it does, but downwards it logically engages. What am I missing?
Does it look like I need a spring to lift it?
I also wanted to know if it's 32 balls bearing them because there are 33, Where does the other one go?
Thanks you

I'm sorry but I really can't help. Five years ago I only disassembled the stage, and a few other parts, but not the focusing block.

You might try this microscope site (groups.io/g/Microscope/topic). It has loads of info and members are very active. I asked a question about cheese head metric screws and within three days there were 42 replies.

Hello.
I counted them again and I see 33.
Anyway, I finished assembling it and it was very well organized, in general with a smooth and pleasant movements ... Here I have the other remaining #33 pellet.
It is right here alone on the table.
Today I was testing Dialux again and found this creature, phase contrast.
npl phaco 20x
Heine condeser...I don't know what it is ,maybe some kind of Amphipod breeding in they shell , I found it among some nets full of seaweed .
